Please consider the closest thing to a law when it comes to economics:

 

Incentives matter.

 

As obvious as this sounds, it’s painfully easy to overlook this simple truth.

Finding the incentive that might be behind a specific event is like getting to the root of a problem — get to the root and you have a chance to decrease the odds of getting tangled up in the weeds that the root is responsible for in the first place.

Incentives are invisible forces of nature, so it’s damn near impossible to objectively understand which ones are throwing monkey wrenches into play at any given time.

Does that mean we shouldn’t bother trying?

I sure hope not.
